Relaxing in a luxurious bath is a simple but luxurious pleasure that can create a magical space of peace and relaxation. Warmth, aromas and candlelight all combine to make a simple bath into a beautiful experience and maybe a glass of something…..
Baths can also be used to create a magical atmosphere and raise the physical vibrations of the body and aura to a higher plane – often as a prelude to magical working. It is most usually used for ritual purification, healing or love magic.
Herbs and oils have magical associations that are used to perfume the water for a magical bath and are easy to use. There are many books available and much information online to help you choose which ones to use. Here are a few ideas for you to work with if you wish to explore the world of Magical Baths
Make a mixture of herbs (and oils if wished) and either place in a bag or tie them in a piece of cloth, and put it in the water as it runs into the bath, or make a strong infusion from the herbs and then strain into the bathwater just before you get in. I don’t recommend dropping loose herbs in the bathwater, as I believe this is just too messy, they will be difficult to remove after your bath and can clog up the drain, though if you do want to use petals – they are beautiful after all – use a sink strainer plug to stop them going down the drain.
It is also possible to buy unperfumed bubble bath and you could add essential oils to make your own personal blend.
You could also add oils to a mixture of Epsom salts and baking soda to make bath salts - I have given a couple of recipes below. Where I say 1 part in these recipes I am allowing you some leeway to decide how much to make. You may wish to make a small amount first and experiment with perfumes etc before you make up a batch. This is also a good way to make sure you like the blend you have made, and find out how much oil you wish to have in your blend. Remember to scale up the amounts when you make larger quantities, if you start with 10 grams per 'part' and then decide to scale up to 100 grams per "part" remember to increase the oils proportionately.
If you are using a blend of oils, mix them together before adding to the salts.
You can either make a blend for a specific purpose - e.g. purification; or for pleasure. If you are making a magical preparation then consult a good herbal to find out the magical properties of herbs and oils to choose ones that are associated with the working you are doing.
Don't forget - write it down as you go along so that you can replicate it!
Bath Salt Recipe 1
1 part table salt
2 parts baking soda
3 parts Epsom salt
Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl.
Add essential oils - either a single oil or a blend of your choice, (you can either make it up yourself or buy a prepared blend) and mix well, add a few drops at a time until the scent is as strong as you wish.
Bath Salt Recipe 2
1 part sea salt
1 part Epsom salt
½ part milk powder or ground oatmeal
½ part baking soda
Mix together the dry ingredients and add oils as described in recipe 1
When you have made the Bath Salts keep them in a jar with a good lid to keep moisture out, otherwise it will cake in the jar and be very difficult to get out later.
