This festival marks the height of Spring; the threat of frost has passed and the fertility of the land has been confirmed by the new growth returning to the trees, hedgerows and land, and the new births of farm and wild animals.

Farm animals that have been housed overwinter are sent to pasture as there is now enough grass to feed them without supplementation.

In earlier times they would have on the way to the fields been driven between bonfires with herbs smoking to free them from lice etc.

This practise is what gives the festival its name:     Bel -  Good Tan  -  Fire (Welsh/Romany)

The celebrations we see today were started when life was mainly agriculturally based. They would welcome the advancing warmth and the return to outdoor life after being shut indoors for so long. Food was more plentiful, milk from cows and goats, lamb meat, herbs and other leafy plants were all a welcome addition to their diets after eating stored food over the winter period.

Houses would be dressed with Hawthorn flowers, the flower most associated with Beltaine

THE RITUAL MEANING OF BELTAINE

The God returns from his Winter travels as the God Hunter, guardian of the animals, The Horned One and seeks his love, the Earth Goddess, who is hiding in the woods disguised as a white doe. When he finds her he brings her back to the people and marries her. This is personified in the Mayday celebrations as the marriage of the May Queen and Green Man.

The Maypole signifies their union, the pole is the God and the ribbons the Goddess. It is also a sign of the returning power of the Sun “captured” by the wound ribbons binding in the spirit of the sky.
